count plants, not calories
It hit me today how wrong we’ve thought about what food is. We think of it as something that’s meant to give us energy and power us through our daily activities (because calorie in = calorie out, right?), but it’s much more than that.
I was sadly reminded today that many professionals are still encouraging counting macros and calories as if they’re the most valid way to assess what’s best for the body.
But this simply isn’t true.
Especially when you factor in the multitude of health concerns people face these days (Leaky Gut, Crohn’s, endometriosis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, Lyme, parasites, etc, etc). This is why I take an overall holistic approach in helping people with health and well-being, but if we’re talking specifically about food… it ALL comes down to the plants.
We’re being told that we need to eat this much protein or limit these carbs, but what we NEED to be counting is the number of plants we’re eating instead.
Eating many different plants (especially in one sitting) is the ticket out of our nutrition disaster.
Plants hold the key to the one thing our bodies need most to assimilate the nutrients from the foods and that thing is FIBER! Because without plants, we have no fiber, and this is our ONLY ticket to food being turned into the very thing we’re looking for from it—a thriving body.
So, the next time you’re being encouraged to count your calories for the day, exit out of the My Fitness Pal app and start keeping tally of how many plants you can eat in that given day. (Now if you need a tracker for that, then check out the plant tracker template I created for you here & print it off!)
Because calories are useless if you’re not taking in an abundance of plants. They are what help us thrive. They give us a plethora of vitamins and minerals. And, they are what our bodies need more than anything else.
So, count plants & not calories. That’s so 2010.
