why i’m detoxing

i’m sharing why it was time to initiate a detox on my body (and what’s going on in it) + why you might want to as well!

The body is truly amazing. It’s always trying to self-correct & keep itself running the best it can, but we also live in a time where so much can affect the way it functions. This post is about my story of what happens when the body needs more help than it can provide for itself, and thus begun this journey to detoxing that I’m about to share with you!

And because I love a good timeline… this post has been 7+ months in the making, so let‘s backtrack to then.

It’s December, 2020… my toddler is now 2 years and 2 months and my period finally returns (after an almost 3-year hiatus—it was glorious), but with it comes some serious face/acne issues (mainly along the jawline) & it’s mainly cystic acne which I’ve NEVER had before in my life, until now.

I started feeling like I was 16 again, but it’s a little less fun when you’re in your mid-thirties. I was also hopeful that it was something that would just come & go quickly or only be small spots here & there, but then new very deep, very sore, and very big bumps kept popping up. Not only is it very painful at times, but takes forever to clear (while new spots continued to appear), and it obviously doesn’t make you feel the greatest.

Now I couldn’t deny that something needed to be done.

A SHORT PAUSE + P.S.

As a holistic nutritionist + always leading from a way of natural living/empowered health, I knew that this was about more than just the skin (and probably will save that health dive for another post).

Because remember: our skin is our largest organ, meaning when it manifests something on the surface, it’s not just this superficial thing that’s the issue (and likewise, when we try to “treat it”, we’re just offering a bandaid), but rather something deeper (aka the root cause), so it’s really about getting to that while mediating the problem area in the meantime.

Unpause.

I knew hormones were the main thing at play here in my situation—especially since it all connected:

  • getting my period back after almost 3 years off of it,

  • skin issues appearing right after (with very little before),

  • PLUS, the act alone of going through a pregnancy and postpartum is A LOT on the hormones/hormonal system.

And since nothing has really changed in my lifestyle besides the return of my period, I knew that I probably needed to make a few changes to try to help my skin out.

I already eat a pretty clean + purely (diverse) plant-based diet, but unfortunately, this isn’t enough (for what my body needs right now) and I need to know that I can heal my face through the power of what we put into our mouths.

Enter in the need to detox.

Even with my diet being pretty clean as is, I know there are probably things that need to go (temporarily) for me, like: alcohol, sugars, and gluten.

Although people can have these in their diets without any problems (for example: me, pre-period returning), when a shift in the body happens, sometimes you need to get it extra clean in order to repair, which means taking things out that once worked (or at least testing how the body does with them removed).

So, this is why I’m doing…

SAKARA LEVEL II DETOX

Created with functional medicine doctor Aviva Romm, MD, and building on Sakara’s signature philosophy of plants as medicine, this powerful whole-food cleanse temporarily eliminates common inflammation triggers and floods your body with potent plant nutrition.

Using effective dietary principles like ketosis and intermittent fasting, Level II will help heal the gut, restore the metabolism, release years of toxic build-up, and hit reset on the body’s systems—revealing a healthier, brighter you.

The Level II Detox is five days & focuses on eliminating: meat, dairy, gluten, all sugars (including fruit), all grains, nuts, soy, nightshades (white potatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, chili peppers), pesticides, harmful chemicals, GMOs.

It sounds like a lot, but trust me, it’s only for 5 days & for health, it’s worth it. Plus, you have this stellar line-up to look forward to:

(the full menu + ingredients.)

The only thing I’m slightly worried about is Day 4 because it’s the only all liquid day (and also happens to take place on a Saturday), but looking forward to the process.

On top of these nutrient-dense healing plant-based meals, you’ll also be taking medical grade special-formulated supplements (think: gut healing). I’m definitely excited for this aspect as they’re specific to this program and they ask that you refrain from taking all of the other Sakara products to focus solely on the ones in the detox. Plus, you’ll receive a dry skin brush & email support from the Sakara team (they’re there to help you stick to it!).

So, there you have it! I’m super excited and above all, I’m super curious to see what it does for my skin. I’m prepared that it might bring on more skin issues before it gets better (a true sign of the body detoxing), but we won’t know until I start… which is happening on Wednesday.

I’m thinking about documenting the process (and turning it into a Youtube video) + I’ll be share about it on Insta too… just not during the detox because I’m taking a true detox and staying off social media during this process so I can truly focus on my well-being.✌️

You can check out the vid below that I shot relating to the content in this post as a warm-up to the next vid I’ll do post-detox!

And now a message for you…

WHY YOU MIGHT WANT TO DETOX TOO

There are many reasons to want to detox.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be because you’re experiencing something in your body. You could do it to just simply give your body a break. (It does a lot of beautiful things for us that we definitely take for granted at how efficient it works to keep us in good health, so it definitely deserves this break!)

Or, there could be something that’s ‘off’ in your body and you’re wanting to get it into this super clean state to see what arises from it.

Or, maybe you want to ditch your coffee habit & going ALL IN with this detox is what you need to make it happen!

Or, maybe you know your gut health is not optimal and you’d like to get it back on track.

Either way, the choice is yours and a detox (2-3x a year) is never a bad thing.

I definitely would love to detox with someone next time I do it (probably in a few months time) as I’m doing it solo this time around! Is that someone you? 😉

Plus, if you’re brand new to Sakara, you can save 20% off this detox + anything you place in that first order using my discount code. Just head to Sakara.com and use my code GLOWWITHCHARSAKARA at checkout!

You can also learn more about Sakara as a whole by checking out this page (it has more info on the programs, why I fell in love with them & decided to become an Ambassador + some of my fave products!).

I will see you on the other side of this detox & don’t worry, I’ll keep track along the process and share in the near future!
